Stab-Lok is still on the garage wall in Pierce County. Tacoma Power still wants the electrical permit before work starts. The same utility still wants ten business days before it will pull the meter.
Pay for the electrical permit in Accela first. Only then schedule the disconnect. Those two systems do not match. A helper with a van cannot print that permit or cut Tacoma Power's seal.
What Tacoma Power actually wrote
Start with the disconnect page. You must have an Electrical Permit and pay all applicable fees before scheduling a residential disconnect/reconnect.
Disconnect requests must be submitted at least ten business days before the requested date.
Meter tampering is unauthorized removal of a meter or meter seal. That sits in TMC 12.06.140. Disconnecting or reconnecting of service conductors shall not be performed by anyone other than an authorized Tacoma Power representative.
The city-utility issues the electrical permit. Tacoma Power will not treat a cut seal as ordinary maintenance. Those two systems do not match.
Confirm the logo on the bill. Most Tacoma addresses are Tacoma Power. University Place, Lakewood, and Gig Harbor may be Tacoma Power, Puget Sound Energy, or Peninsula Light.
Tacoma Power does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count. It does publish the ten-business-day disconnect lead time. Charlie describes most panel replacements as one day of disruption. That is a contractor field note.
Permits inside Tacoma and in Pierce County
Inside Tacoma Power territory, start at Electrical Permitting and Inspections. File through Accela at Tacoma.gov/Permits. The inspection office is 3628 South 35th Street. Questions go to 253-502-8277.
Who pulls the permit matters. TMC 12.06A.210 requires the permit before anyone installs, alters, or repairs electrical equipment. That includes work that needs the Tacoma Power meter off. TMC 12.06A.230 lets an owner pull the permit on a building they own if they will not rent, sell, or lease any part of it for twenty-four months after final inspection, and if they do the work themselves. You and anyone who helped must be present at every inspection. Owning the home does not mean you should pull the permit and then hire someone under your name.
University Place, Lakewood, Puyallup, and Gig Harbor addresses that are not Tacoma Power file at a different counter. Washington L&I is the usual backup AHJ. A quote that only says “we handle the permit” should name the city on the address and the utility on the bill.
Price, without inventing one
Charlie’s Federal Pacific page publishes two bands and does not hide the spread. A proactive replacement is printed at $1,800 to $2,800. An emergency replacement after an insurance crisis is printed at $3,500 to $5,000.
Those two lines do not match. We will not average them. We are not inventing a Tacoma midpoint from either line.
Washington license lookup is public. Ask for the L&I contractor number and check it before you sign. One shop advertises this work on their own site and prints a license number. Charlie’s Federal Pacific page names Stab-Lok, Zinsco, Challenger, and Pushmatic and prints WA License #CHARLEL797MP. They write daily work across University Place, Tacoma, Lakewood, and Steilacoom. They are listed for the panel letter, not as a Pierce County directory.
Directory-only shops are omitted. A page that names these brands and does not print a Washington contractor license number is not a listing. The listed shop is not affiliated with Panel Letter.
What to hand the carrier
The useful packet is the closed Tacoma Power or L&I electrical permit, the passed inspection, an invoice with the contractor number that was on the permit, and photos if the letter asks. If your electrician produces a load calculation or panel schedule, send that too. We did not find a carrier page that publishes a single statewide sticker form. Ask the agent what they will actually open.

Same page, different row. An emergency replacement after a coverage crisis is not the proactive band. Those two systems do not match.

Permit
Tacoma Power Electrical Permitting and Inspections
Who pulls it: Tacoma Power is the electrical permit office for work in its service area. Applications run through Accela at Tacoma.gov/Permits. The Electrical Inspection Office is 3628 South 35th Street. Inspection questions go to 253-502-8277 or powerei@tacoma.gov. Before residential work begins you must submit an electrical permit application and pay the fees. TMC 12.06A.210 requires a permit before electrical equipment may be installed, altered, or repaired, including when a Tacoma Power meter has to come off. TMC 12.06A.230 is the owner path. Electrical permits on a building you own and do not intend to rent, sell, or lease may issue to you if you document ownership, affirm you will not rent, sell, or lease any part of the building for at least twenty-four months after final inspection, and do the work yourself. You and anyone who helped must be present at every inspection. If the inspector decides the owner work is not qualified, the remaining work can be required to go to a licensed electrical contractor. University Place, Lakewood, Puyallup, and Gig Harbor addresses that are not Tacoma Power file at a different counter, often Washington L&I.
University Place, Lakewood, Puyallup, and Gig Harbor may sit in Tacoma Power, Puget Sound Energy, or Peninsula Light territory. A quote that only says we handle the permit should name the city on the address and the utility on the bill. Washington electrical-contractor licensing is L&I. Ask for the number they will put on the Tacoma Power or L&I file.
Utility coordination
Tacoma Power on most Tacoma bills
Who disconnects: Tacoma Power’s disconnect page is blunt. You must have an electrical permit and pay the fees before scheduling a residential disconnect or reconnect. Disconnect requests must be submitted at least ten business days before the requested date. Submit the request online or call 253-502-8460. Meter tampering is unauthorized removal of a meter or meter seal under TMC 12.06.140. Disconnecting or reconnecting of service conductors shall not be performed by anyone other than an authorized Tacoma Power representative. That is not a homeowner meter-pull path.
Outage window: Tacoma Power does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count for a residential panel swap. It does publish a ten-business-day lead time before a scheduled residential disconnect.
Confirm the logo on the bill before anyone prices the job. Most Tacoma addresses are Tacoma Power. University Place, Lakewood, and Gig Harbor may be Tacoma Power, Puget Sound Energy, or Peninsula Light. A like-for-like panel swap still needs the disconnect ticket and the electrical inspection. A service-size change is still the utility’s disconnect and reconnect, not a helper cutting the seal.
What to hand the insurer
- Closed Tacoma Power, Washington L&I, or other municipal electrical permit
- Passed electrical inspection
- Invoice showing the Washington contractor license used on the permit
- Photos of the old and new panel if the carrier’s letter asks for them
- Load calculation or panel schedule if the electrician produced one
Ask your agent for the exact list. Carriers do not publish a single national checklist.
Electricians who advertise this job
A shop is listed only if it advertises Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or insurance-driven panel replacement on its own site and prints a license number there. Trade-association locators already exist. We will not pad this list. Verify the license before you hire.
To get introduced, use the quote form on this page. We do not send you to the shop from here.
