Federal Pacific panel replacement in Birmingham

A Birmingham insurance letter that names Federal Pacific is a PEP electrical permit plus an Alabama Power ticket. Room 210 sits at 710 20th Street North. Alabama Power owns the meter.

Do you have an insurance letter about this panel?

Photo upload comes later. A picture of the closed door and the inside label is enough if someone asks.

An Eighth Street shop in Leeds prints an Alabama electrical contractor number. Alabama Power still owns the meter. Planning, Engineering and Permits still issues the Birmingham file.

The city inspector will not own the Alabama Power seal. Alabama Power will not print the Room 210 electrical permit. Those two systems do not match. A helper with a van cannot stand in for either one.

What the utilities actually wrote

Most Birmingham and Jefferson County bills are Alabama Power. Confirm the logo on the bill before anyone prices the job.

Start with Rules and Regulations Section 3.16. The discovery by the Company of unauthorized connections to, or tampering with the Company’s meters, meter seals, or metering equipment, or evidence thereof, shall subject the Customer to the disconnection of service and possible prosecution.

The outage page is blunt on the box. The meter box belongs to the customer, not Alabama Power.

If it is damaged, a licensed electrician has to make the repairs before Alabama Power is allowed to restore power. That is not a homeowner meter-pull path.

Alabama Power does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count. Polar Bear writes that it schedules the required inspections. That is a contractor field note.

Permits in Birmingham and in Jefferson County

Inside the city, start at Planning, Engineering and Permits, City Hall, Room 210, 710 20th Street North. Permitting is 205-254-2904.

Who pulls the permit matters. Trade permits are typically processed over the counter and can also be processed online. Inspection Services applies the adopted codes to alterations, repair, and equipment connected to the building. Owning the home does not mean you should pull the permit and then hire someone under your name.

Hoover, Vestavia Hills, and unincorporated Jefferson County file at their own counters. A quote that only says “we handle the permit” should name the city on the address.

Price, without inventing one

Two contractor pages publish panel bands and do not hide the split.

Hooked Up’s August 13, 2026 West Texas page prints a 100-amp to 200-amp upgrade at $2,200 to $3,800. Bates’s Nashville page prints a full 200-amp upgrade at $2,500 to $4,500. Those two systems do not match. We will not average them. We are not inventing a 20th Street midpoint from either system. Neither shop is in Alabama. The bands show how far prices spread, not what a Birmingham job will cost.

Alabama license lookup is public. Ask for the number and check it before you sign. One shop advertises this work on their own site and prints a license number. Polar Bear’s rewiring page names Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco replacements. The shop’s own site prints AL Licensed Electrical Contractor #08846. They write daily work from 1615 8th Street in Leeds. They are listed for the panel letter, not as a Jefferson County directory.

Directory-only shops are omitted. A page that names these brands and does not print an Alabama electrical contractor number is not a listing. The listed shop is not affiliated with Panel Letter.

What to hand the carrier

The useful packet is the closed City of Birmingham or suburban electrical permit, the passed electrical inspection, an invoice with the license number that was on the permit, and photos if the letter asks. If your electrician produces a load calculation or panel schedule, send that too. We did not find a carrier page that publishes a single statewide sticker form. Ask the agent what they will actually open.

Electricians who advertise this job

A shop is listed only if it advertises Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or insurance-driven panel replacement on its own site and prints a license number there. Trade-association locators already exist. We will not pad this list. Verify the license before you hire.

To get introduced, use the quote form on this page. We do not send you to the shop from here.
