Federal Pacific panel replacement in Sarasota

Your four-point came back with a brand name. The city or the county still wants an electrical permit on that address. FPL still wants its own disconnect ticket before anyone opens the meter enclosure.

FPL will not re-energize until the inspecting authority signs. Get the city or county electrical permit first, then book the FPL disconnect. Those two systems do not match. A helper with a van cannot print that permit or book that FPL appointment.

What FPL actually wrote

Start with the Project Portal job aid. Only FPL is authorized to disconnect service conductors going to the home.

Customers can self-schedule a residential disconnect and reconnect for single-phase services at or under 320 amps.

All electrical work involving a meter enclosure requires an electrical inspection by the inspecting authority before FPL re-energizes the service.

Inspections must be submitted to FPL by 1 p.m. Eastern so same-day reconnect is possible.

The Electric Service Standards add a second path. FPL normally performs both the disconnect and the reconnect. A licensed and qualified electrical contractor may disconnect an overhead single-phase service of 300 amps or less only when FPL approves it, the attachment point stays intact, no FPL locking device is on the socket, and a reconnect appointment is already scheduled. That exception is not a homeowner meter-pull path.

Confirm the logo on the bill. Most Sarasota, Venice, and Bradenton addresses are FPL.

FPL does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count. Thomas Edison describes four to six hours of work on a straightforward swap. AK Electrical describes staging the shutoff for early morning. Those are contractor field notes.

Permits inside the city and in the county

Inside the city, start at Building and Permitting, 1575 2nd Street. Electrical permits go through the online portal. Single-trade electrical work may qualify for over-the-counter review. Permitting is 941-263-6494 or CityPermits@sarasotafl.gov.

Who pulls the permit matters. Florida Statute 489.103(7) lets an owner act as contractor on a one-family or two-family residence. The owner has to provide direct, onsite supervision of work not performed by licensed contractors. The owner has to personally sign the permit application. The city keeps an Implications of Acting as Your Own Contractor handout on the same page. Owning the home does not mean you should pull the permit and then hire someone under your name.

Unincorporated Sarasota County files at the county. The county code is blunt. Anyone who wants to replace an electrical system shall first obtain the required permit. All electrical service changes shall require a permit. County applications run through Accela. Work performed by the owner is not an express permit.

Bradenton and unincorporated Manatee County file at a different counter. Venice, North Port, and Longboat Key may file at a different counter than 1575 2nd Street. A quote that only says “we handle the permit” should name the city on the address.

Price, without inventing one

AK Electrical’s May 2026 Sarasota cost page publishes installed bands and does not hide the add-ons. A like-for-like panel replacement at the same amperage is printed at $2,500 to $4,000. A standard 200-amp upgrade is printed at $3,500 to $5,000. A full service upgrade with service-entrance replacement and FPL coordination is printed at $4,500 to $8,000+. Permit fees are printed separately at $150 to $350.

Siesta Key Electric’s 2026 Sarasota table prints $2,000 to $4,500 for 200-amp work. The same table prints $1,200 to $2,500 for 100-amp and $3,500 to $6,500 or more for 400-amp. Those two systems do not match. We will not average them. We are not inventing a third Gulf Coast midpoint from either table.

Florida license lookup is public. Ask for the EC or ES number and check it on DBPR before you sign. Two shops advertise this work on their own sites and print a license number. Thomas Edison’s panel page names Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco/Sylvania, and Pushmatic and prints EC13015487. AK Electrical’s cost page names those brands plus Challenger and prints ES12002299. Both write Venice, Sarasota, and Bradenton. They are listed for the panel letter, not as a Manatee County directory.

Directory-only shops are omitted. A page that names these brands and does not print a Florida license number is not a listing. The listed shops are not affiliated with Panel Letter.

What to hand the carrier

The useful packet is the closed city or county electrical permit, the passed inspection FPL needs before reconnect, an invoice with the license number that was on the permit, and photos if the letter asks. If your electrician produces a load calculation or panel schedule, send that too. We did not find a carrier page that publishes a single statewide sticker form. Ask the agent what they will actually open.
