An East Canton shop on Cedar Street and a Market Avenue permit is how a Canton letter actually moves. The carrier still named Federal Pacific on the panel.
The city inspector will not own the AEP seal. AEP will not print the 3rd Floor electrical permit. Those two systems do not match. A helper with a van cannot stand in for either one.
What the utilities actually wrote
Most Canton, Massillon, North Canton, and East Canton bills are AEP Ohio. Confirm the logo on the bill before anyone prices the job.
Start with the Guide for Electric Service and Meter Installations. All enclosures containing un-metered conductors shall be capable of being effectively sealed by the Company.
The breaking of seals by other than authorized persons or tampering with the Company’s meters and measuring devices is prohibited.
Where the Company detects tampering that causes unauthorized use or lost registration, it may discontinue the supply without notice and remove its meter. The Customer or electrician shall contact AEP to obtain access for inspection. That is not a homeowner meter-pull path.
AEP Ohio does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count. The Canton electric permit asks for the AEP disconnect and reconnect work-order numbers. That is a city field, not a shop promise.
Permits in Canton and in nearby Stark County
Inside the city, start at the Building Department, 424 Market Avenue N, 3rd Floor. Phone is 330-430-7800. Email is buildingcode@cantonohio.gov. Electrical work uses the Electric Permit Application.
Who pulls the permit matters. Codified Ordinance 1313.08 requires a written permit before the work starts. A residential service-related file also needs the one-line drawing. 1313.05 lets a single-family owner personally perform work on the home they occupy after an interview and a sworn affidavit. The same section is blunt on service work. None of those homeowner provisions shall permit a bona fide home owner to make preparations for any temporary service or any work on the permanent service entrance. Owning the home does not mean you should pull the permit and then hire someone under your name.
East Canton, Massillon, North Canton, and unincorporated Stark County file at their own counters. A quote that only says “we handle the permit” should name the city on the address.
Price, without inventing one
Two Ohio contractor pages publish panel bands and do not hide the split.
K&K’s Massillon page prints typical 100-amp to 200-amp upgrades at $3,000 to $6,000. ANR’s Akron hire page, which also writes Canton, prints 100-amp to 200-amp upgrades at $2,500 to $4,500. Those two systems do not match. We will not average them. We are not inventing a Market Avenue midpoint from either line.
Ohio OCILB lookup is public. Ask for the number and check it before you sign. One shop advertises this work on their own site and prints a license number. Gragg’s panel-upgrade page names Federal Pacific Electric Stab-Lok and Zinsco-GTE. The shop’s own homepage prints license number 38219. They write daily work from 333 Cedar St S in East Canton. They are listed for the panel letter, not as a Stark County directory.
Directory-only shops are omitted. A page that names these brands and does not print a license number is not a listing. The listed shop is not affiliated with Panel Letter.
What to hand the carrier
The useful packet is the closed City of Canton or other Stark County electrical permit, the passed electrical inspection, an invoice with the license number that was on the permit, and photos if the letter asks. If your electrician produces a load calculation or panel schedule, send that too. We did not find a carrier page that publishes a single statewide sticker form. Ask the agent what they will actually open.
Typical replacement cost
One Massillon shop and one Akron shop publish Ohio bands that do not match. We are not inventing a Market Avenue midpoint from them
$3,000 to $6,000
Typical 100-amp to 200-amp upgrade printed by a Massillon shop
Their Ohio panel-upgrade page covering Stark County. They write Federal Pacific or Zinsco replacements may cost more. That is a different scope. An Akron shop that also writes Canton prints 100-amp to 200-amp upgrades at $2,500 to $4,500. Those two systems do not match. We will not average them. We are not inventing a Market Avenue midpoint from either line.

100-amp to 200-amp service upgrade printed by an Akron shop that writes Canton
Their September 2026 hire-an-electrician page. The same table prints same-amperage replacements at $1,400 to $2,600. Those two lines do not match. This 100-amp to 200-amp line is not K&K’s $3,000 to $6,000 Stark County band. Those two systems do not match. We will not average them.

Permit
City of Canton Building Department
Who pulls it: The Building Department sits at 424 Market Avenue N, 3rd Floor, Canton, OH 44702. Phone is 330-430-7800. Email is buildingcode@cantonohio.gov. Electrical files use the Electric Permit Application. A residential service-related file also needs the one-line drawing. The application has its own lines for AEP disconnect and reconnect work orders. Codified Ordinance 1313.08 requires a written permit before the work starts. Massillon, North Canton, and Jackson Township are not the Market Avenue file.
Canton 1313.05 lets a single-family owner personally perform work on the home they occupy after an interview and a sworn affidavit. That owner still has to get the permit. The same section is blunt on service work. None of those homeowner provisions shall permit a bona fide home owner to make preparations for any temporary service or any work on the permanent service entrance. East Canton, Massillon, and unincorporated Stark County file at their own counters. A quote that only says we handle the permit should name the city on the address. Ohio electrical-contractor advertising is OCILB. Ask for the number they will put on the Canton file.
Utility coordination
AEP Ohio on most Canton and Massillon bills
Who disconnects: AEP’s Guide for Electric Service and Meter Installations is blunt on the seal. All enclosures containing un-metered conductors shall be capable of being effectively sealed by the Company. The breaking of seals by other than authorized persons or tampering with the Company’s meters and measuring devices is prohibited. Where the Company detects that the physical facilities of the Company have been tampered with so as to cause an unauthorized use of electric energy or loss of meter registration, the Company may at any time and without notice discontinue the supply of electric energy to the Customer and remove its meter and other apparatus. The Customer or electrician shall contact AEP to obtain access for inspection. That is not a homeowner meter-pull path.
Outage window: AEP Ohio does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count for a residential panel swap.
Confirm the logo on the bill before anyone prices the job. Most Canton, Massillon, North Canton, and East Canton addresses are AEP Ohio. A like-for-like panel swap still needs the city inspection and that AEP ticket. A service-size change is still the company’s disconnect and reconnect, not a helper cutting the seal. The Canton electric permit asks for the AEP disconnect and reconnect work-order numbers. That is a city field, not a shop promise.
What to hand the insurer
- Closed City of Canton or other Stark County electrical permit
- Passed electrical inspection
- Invoice showing the license number used on the permit
- Photos of the old and new panel if the carrier’s letter asks for them
- Load calculation or panel schedule if the electrician produced one
Ask your agent for the exact list. Carriers do not publish a single national checklist.
Electricians who advertise this job
A shop is listed only if it advertises Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or insurance-driven panel replacement on its own site and prints a license number there. Trade-association locators already exist. We will not pad this list. Verify the license before you hire.
To get introduced, use the quote form on this page. We do not send you to the shop from here.
