Federal Pacific panel replacement in Chattanooga

Chattanooga's Land Development Office takes residential electrical permits at 1250 Market Street, Suite 1000, and only from a Class 1 or Class 2 city license holder. EPB keeps ownership of the meter.

Do you have an insurance letter about this panel?

Photo upload comes later. A picture of the closed door and the inside label is enough if someone asks.

A Chattanooga panel job gets its power back in a fixed order. The city electrical inspector passes the meter and leaves a sticker on it. Then the applicant calls EPB at (423) 648-1372 and asks for the power. Those two systems do not match.

EPB's builder page hedges on this. It says local law will likely require a passed electrical service inspection before EPB switches on power to new meter centers or wiring. Ask the shop quoting your swap whether your job falls under that.

What the utilities actually wrote

Confirm the name on the bill before anyone prices the job. The rules below are EPB’s.

Start with the Schedule of Electric Rules and Regulations. All wiring and equipment beyond the point of delivery shall be installed, owned, and maintained by the Customer, except the meter.

EPB shall provide, own, install, and maintain the electric meter and all equipment associated with the electric meter.

All meters, service connections, and other equipment furnished by EPB shall be and remain the property of EPB. EPB may discontinue service for evidence of tampering with the EPB meter or other EPB owned equipment.

The city’s meter-inspection page tells you what happens after a pass. If the meter inspection is approved, the electrical inspector will leave a sticker on that meter. It is the responsibility of the applicant to contact the Electric Power Board at (423) 648-1372 to request the power to be turned on.

EPB’s single-family guidelines repeat that call. When your meters have passed inspection and received stickers, contact EPB at 423-648-1372. EPB writes it will energize the premise the next business day.

EPB does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count for a residential panel swap.

Permits in Chattanooga and in Hamilton County

Inside the city, start at the Land Development Office, Development Resource Center, 1250 Market Street, Suite 1000. Trade permits are (423) 643-5884.

Who pulls the permit matters. The electrical-permit page wants a City of Chattanooga Class 1 or Class 2 license on a residential electrical file. Class 1 is required for commercial electrical work. A Tennessee state contractors license is required when the contract value is $25,000 or above. Permits are not accepted for processing after 3:30 p.m. Applications go through OpenGov.

If the meter inspection is rejected for repairs, the city wants a properly licensed electrical contractor on a separate electrical permit. The owner, tenant, or landlord cannot make those repairs themselves.

Hamilton County runs its own Building Inspection Department at 4005 Cromwell Road, 423-209-7860, open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Its page lists City of Chattanooga files separately, at the Market Street address. A quote that only says “we handle the permit” should name the city on the address.

Price, without inventing one

Town and Country prints no dollar figure on its Chattanooga panel page. Both bands below come from other parts of Tennessee. One page is for Nashville and one is for Bartlett and Memphis, and neither covers Hamilton County.

For a full 200-amp upgrade, Bates Electric's Nashville panel page gives $2,500 to $4,500. Square One lists $1,800 to $2,600 for fuse boxes and flagged Federal Pacific or Sylvania Zinsco panels, on a homepage titled for Bartlett and Memphis. The carrier should see a Hamilton County quote, on paper, from a licensed shop. Those two systems do not match. We will not average them. We are not inventing a Market Street midpoint from either system.

Any Tennessee contractor number you are handed can go into the Board for Licensing Contractors search, which is how this listing was checked. Town and Country’s Chattanooga panel page names Federal Pacific. The shop’s own homepage prints TN License #79201. On that search, license 79201 shows Active until 03/31/2027, with a main address in Ooltewah, Hamilton County. The homepage adds that the shop holds City of Chattanooga, Hamilton County, and Soddy-Daisy licenses. The board result earned it a mention here, and it is one licensed option among others.

Directory-only shops are omitted. Chattanooga sites that mention Federal Pacific but show no Tennessee contractor number stayed off this page. The listed shop is not affiliated with Panel Letter.

What to hand the carrier

The useful packet is the closed City of Chattanooga or Hamilton County electrical permit, the passed electrical inspection, an invoice with the license number that was on the permit, and photos if the letter asks. If your electrician produces a load calculation or panel schedule, send that too. We did not find a carrier page that publishes a single statewide sticker form. Ask the agent what they will actually open.

Electricians who advertise this job

A shop is listed only if it advertises Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or insurance-driven panel replacement on its own site and prints a license number there. Trade-association locators already exist. We will not pad this list. Verify the license before you hire.

To get introduced, use the quote form on this page. We do not send you to the shop from here.
