Federal Pacific panel replacement in Palm Springs

A Palm Springs insurance letter that names Federal Pacific is a city electrical permit plus a utility lockring that is not the same company on every Coachella Valley bill. Building Safety issues the Palm Springs file. The logo on the bill is usually Southern California Edison.

Do you have an insurance letter about this panel?

Photo upload comes later. A picture of the closed door and the inside label is enough if someone asks.

The carrier circled Federal Pacific on a mid-century ranch that was wired for window units. Building Safety still wants the electrical permit. Southern California Edison still owns the lockring on most Palm Springs bills.

The city inspector will not break an SCE lockring. SCE will not print the Tahquitz Canyon electrical permit. Those two systems do not match. A helper with a van cannot stand in for either one.

What the utilities actually wrote

The Coachella Valley is not one utility. Confirm the logo on the bill before anyone prices the job.

If the bill says Southern California Edison, start with the building-renovation page. A panel upgrade or meter spot for an existing service is an SCE project request.

For lockring removals or reinstalls, an authorized account holder should call 1-800-655-4555.

That is not a homeowner meter-pull path.

If the bill says Imperial Irrigation District, that is a different company. IID’s energy-theft page treats tampering with an electric meter, equipment, or power line as a reportable offense. Those two systems do not match.

City of Palm Springs addresses are usually SCE. Indio, Coachella, and La Quinta bills are often IID.

Neither utility publishes a guaranteed power-off hour count. Truly Tough writes that a straightforward 100-amp to 200-amp upgrade finishes in one to two days, and that SCE meter-base or service-drop work can add a few days. That is a contractor field note.

Permits in Palm Springs and in the rest of the valley

Inside Palm Springs, start at Building Safety, 3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way. The main line is 760-322-8398. Files go through Palm Springs Online. The city publishes a Main Panel Upgrade eligibility checklist. A final electrical inspection is required to release the meter for testing.

Who pulls the permit matters. Section 105 limits electrical permits on other than R-3 and associated U occupancies to licensed contractors. The city also publishes an Owner-Builder Verification form. Ask Building Safety which name goes on the Palm Springs Online file before you sign. Owning the home does not mean you should pull the permit and then hire someone under your name.

Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio, and Coachella file at their own counters. A quote that only says “we handle the permit” should name the city on the address.

Price, without inventing one

One Coachella Valley contractor page publishes a 100-amp to 200-amp band and does not hide the caveats.

Truly Tough’s March 2026 Palm Springs blog prints $3,000 to $6,500 for a standard 100-amp to 200-amp swap. They say the number moves with panel location, existing wiring, and whether SCE has to upgrade the utility-side service. Relocation, utility-side work, or EV circuits on the same job are printed separately at $8,000 to $10,000. That is a different scope. We will not average them. We are not inventing a Tahquitz midpoint from the standard band.

California license lookup is public. Ask for the CSLB C-10 number and check it before you sign. One shop advertises this work on their own site and prints a license number. Miller Electric’s panel-upgrade page names Zinsco and Federal Pacific and prints License #1009917. They write daily work across Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, and Indio. They are listed for the panel letter, not as a Coachella Valley directory.

Directory-only shops are omitted. A page that names these brands and does not print a California contractor license number is not a listing. The listed shop is not affiliated with Panel Letter.

What to hand the carrier

The useful packet is the closed Palm Springs or other valley city electrical permit, the passed electrical inspection including the electric final release when the file needs a meter release, an invoice with the license number that was on the permit, and photos if the letter asks. If your electrician produces a load calculation or panel schedule, send that too. We did not find a carrier page that publishes a single statewide sticker form. Ask the agent what they will actually open.

Electricians who advertise this job

A shop is listed only if it advertises Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or insurance-driven panel replacement on its own site and prints a license number there. Trade-association locators already exist. We will not pad this list. Verify the license before you hire.

To get introduced, use the quote form on this page. We do not send you to the shop from here.
