Federal Pacific panel replacement in New Haven

A New Haven insurance letter that names Federal Pacific is a city electrical permit plus a United Illuminating service-location number. The Building Department issues the permit. UI owns the seal on the meter.

Do you have an insurance letter about this panel?

Photo upload comes later. A picture of the closed door and the inside label is enough if someone asks.

The policy letter listed Zinsco. United Illuminating still owns the seal. The Building Department still files the electrical permit.

The city counter will not cut UI's drip loop. UI will not issue the city electrical permit. Those two systems do not match. A helper with a van cannot file either ticket.

What United Illuminating actually wrote

Start with the 2017 Guidebook of Requirements for Electric Service. All unauthorized persons are forbidden to connect, disconnect, relocate, tamper with or break seals on service entrance equipment, metering equipment or pull boxes and troughs housing unmetered conductors.

That sentence is not a courtesy. This requirement is not intended to prevent the customer from operating the main switch or replacing blown fuses. A panel swap is not a fuse swap.

When it is necessary to cut or remove a meter seal, or to de-energize an existing meter, the company must be notified immediately at 800-722-5584.

Homeowners are not authorized to cut and reconnect electric services. Homeowners can only install de-energized or dead services.

Unauthorized connections to the company’s service conductors will be treated as tampering and may result in criminal prosecution.

A UI job number is required before the Building Department can post a release. Before UI can schedule or energize any new or revamped service, the authority having jurisdiction must approve the construction. That acceptance has to be posted in UI’s system.

The Building Department issues the electrical permit. UI will not treat a cut seal as ordinary maintenance. Those two systems do not match.

Confirm the logo on the bill. New Haven addresses are United Illuminating. Some Hamden, North Haven, and inland towns may be Eversource.

UI does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count. AAA describes most residential upgrades as a few hours without power. That is a contractor field note.

Permits inside New Haven and in New Haven County

Inside the city, start at the Building Department. The hours page lists 165 Church Street. Construction permits go in online. Paper applications are not acceptable. Electrical inspectors sit in the office from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The owner-info page says electrical systems usually need a permit.

Who pulls the permit matters. Connecticut state law, as Eversource publishes it, lets a homeowner do electrical work on a single-family, owner-occupied residence. UI’s Guidebook still forbids that same homeowner from cutting and reconnecting the service. Those two systems do not match. The permit, if you pull it yourself, does not become a meter-pull ticket. Owning the home does not mean you should pull the permit and then hire someone under your name.

West Haven, Hamden, East Haven, and North Haven file at their own counters. A quote that only says “we handle the permit” should name the town on the address.

Price, without inventing one

PowerPlus’s New Haven page publishes a single-family Federal Pacific, Zinsco, GE push-to-reset, or fused-service replacement at $1,800 to $5,500. They say multifamily scope varies.

AAA’s Connecticut panel page prints a basic 200-amp residential upgrade at $2,400 to $3,200. They say that band includes the panel, wiring, permits, and inspection.

Those two systems do not match. We will not average them. We are not inventing a harbor midpoint from either shop.

Connecticut license lookup is public. Ask for the E-1 number and check it before you sign. Two shops advertise this work on their own sites and print a license number. PowerPlus’s New Haven page names Federal Pacific and Zinsco and prints CT E1 #197810. AAA’s panel page names Federal Pacific and Zinsco and prints CT License E1-0191759. They write daily work across New Haven, West Haven, and New Haven County. They are listed for the panel letter, not as a harbor directory.

Directory-only shops are omitted. A page that names these brands and does not print a Connecticut E-1 number is not a listing. The listed shops are not affiliated with Panel Letter.

What to hand the carrier

The useful packet is the closed city or town electrical permit, the passed municipal inspection, an invoice with the E-1 number that was on the permit, and photos if the letter asks. If your electrician produces a load calculation or panel schedule, send that too. We did not find a carrier page that publishes a single statewide sticker form. Ask the agent what they will actually open.

Electricians who advertise this job

A shop is listed only if it advertises Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or insurance-driven panel replacement on its own site and prints a license number there. Trade-association locators already exist. We will not pad this list. Verify the license before you hire.

To get introduced, use the quote form on this page. We do not send you to the shop from here.
