Federal Pacific panel replacement in Lafayette

A Lafayette insurance letter that names Federal Pacific is a consolidated-government electrical permit plus a Lafayette Utilities System disconnect. Permitting and Codes issues the permit. LUS owns the meter on most city bills.

Photo upload comes later. A picture of the closed door and the inside label is enough if someone asks.

The carrier circled Federal Pacific on a 1960s Lafayette ranch. Permitting and Codes still wants the electrical permit. Lafayette Utilities System still owns the meter on most city bills.

Codes will not break an LUS seal. LUS will not print the LCG electrical permit. Those two systems do not match. A helper with a van cannot stand in for either one.

What Lafayette Utilities System actually wrote

Start with the Procedures and Specifications for Electrical Service. For electric meters that are the property of LUS, it is required that only an authorized representative of LUS break a seal or remove a meter whether the meter is in service or not.

Jumpers provided by LUS are to be used for no more than ten days.

LUS Electric Operations supplies the individual meter bases. The owner installs those bases.

Service connections wait on a satisfactory final inspection from the LCG Codes Division.

The Development Guidelines tell contractors not to intentionally disconnect electric service to any customer. They also tell contractors not to operate any devices owned by LUS. Dispatch is 337-291-5700.

Permitting and Codes issues the electrical permit. LUS will not treat a cut seal as ordinary maintenance. Those two systems do not match.

Confirm the logo on the bill. Most City of Lafayette addresses are Lafayette Utilities System. LUS says it also serves certain parish areas. Youngsville, Broussard, Carencro, and some unincorporated addresses may be Entergy Louisiana or SLEMCO.

LUS does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count. Pipes & Plugs describes most panel upgrades as a one-day job. That is a contractor field note.

Permits inside Lafayette and in Lafayette Parish

Inside the city and the unincorporated parish, start at Permitting and Codes, 220 West Willow Street, Building B. Questions go to 337-291-8461. The Codes Division applies the 2020 National Electrical Code.

Who pulls the permit matters. LCG wants an electrical permit before the panel comes out. Electrical contractors register with the city-parish. If you are the applicant on residential work valued over $7,500, Louisiana still wants the Affidavit Claiming Exemption from Licensure. You have to supervise the work yourself. You may not hire an unlicensed person as your contractor. Owning the home does not mean you should pull the permit and then hire someone under your name.

Youngsville, Broussard, Carencro, Scott, and New Iberia file at their own counters. A quote that only says “we handle the permit” should name the city on the address.

Price, without inventing one

Pipes & Plugs’ Lafayette panel guide publishes one job band and does not hide the caveats. Average panel-upgrade costs in Lafayette are printed at $1,500 to $3,000. They say the number moves with panel size, installation complexity, and permitting and inspection fees. We will not average them. We are not inventing a Pinhook midpoint from this band.

Louisiana license lookup is public. Ask for the LSLBC number and check it before you sign. One shop advertises this work on their own site and prints a license number. Pipes & Plugs’ panel-upgrade page names Federal Pacific and prints Electrical Contractor License #42498. They write daily work across Lafayette, Youngsville, Broussard, and New Iberia. They are listed for the panel letter, not as an Acadiana directory.

Directory-only shops are omitted. A page that names these brands and does not print a Louisiana contractor license number is not a listing. The listed shop is not affiliated with Panel Letter.

What to hand the carrier

The useful packet is the closed LCG or suburban electrical permit, the passed Codes inspection, an invoice with the license number that was on the permit, and photos if the letter asks. If your electrician produces a load calculation or panel schedule, send that too. We did not find a carrier page that publishes a single statewide sticker form. Ask the agent what they will actually open.

Electricians who advertise this job

A shop is listed only if it advertises Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or insurance-driven panel replacement on its own site and prints a license number there. Trade-association locators already exist. We will not pad this list. Verify the license before you hire.

To get introduced, use the quote form on this page. We do not send you to the shop from here.
