A Wauwatosa shop on Fairview Avenue and a Broadway permit desk is how a Milwaukee letter actually moves. The carrier still named Federal Pacific on the panel.
The city inspector will not own the We Energies seal. We Energies will not print the DNS electrical permit. Those two systems do not match. A helper with a van cannot stand in for either one.
What the utilities actually wrote
Most Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, West Allis, and Greenfield bills are We Energies. Confirm the logo on the bill before anyone prices the job.
Start with the meter-certification page. We have policies prohibiting electricians from cutting meter seals and removing meters when performing residential service rewires.
The policies were created to keep electricians and homeowners safe.
In certain scenarios, a certified licensed electrician can disconnect a service and remove and reinstall a meter. That certification is for a Wisconsin-licensed electrician who finished the company’s training. It is acceptable only in We Energies’ southeastern service area, south of Highway 151 and east of Interstate 90.
An inspection is required to re-energize the service. Offenders will be reported to the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. That is not a homeowner meter-pull path.
We Energies does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count. Same-day reconnect on the temporary-disconnect program needs the inspection no later than 3:30 p.m. Call 800-714-7777 to schedule. Commercial rewires and residential 320-amp rewires still require a scheduled disconnect and reconnect. Lehmann writes most upgrades finish in a single day, six to eight hours. That is a contractor field note.
Permits in Milwaukee and in Wauwatosa
Inside the city, start at Department of Neighborhood Services, Plan Exam and Permits, 809 N Broadway, 1st Floor. The Development Center phone is (414) 286-8210. Electrical questions go to (414) 286-2532.
Who pulls the permit matters. The city’s checklist is blunt. Electrical work, all of it, needs a permit. The contractor must be licensed. Work shall not start before the permit is issued. Owning the home does not mean you should pull the permit and then hire someone under your name.
Wauwatosa, West Allis, Greenfield, and Waukesha County each have their own counter. A quote that only says “we handle the permit” should name the city on the address.
Price, without inventing one
Two Wisconsin contractor pages publish panel bands and do not hide the split.
Trusted’s Pewaukee page prints panel upgrades at $2,500 to $4,500. JETA’s Amery page prints FPE / Zinsco replacements at $2,800 to $3,800. Those two systems do not match. We will not average them. We are not inventing a Broadway midpoint from either system.
Wisconsin license lookup is public. Ask for the DSPS number and check it before you sign. One shop advertises this work on their own site and prints a license number. Lehmann’s Milwaukee panel page names Federal Pacific and Zinsco replacements. The shop’s own site prints Master Electrician #1283316 and Electrical Contractor #1492849. They write daily work from 12012 W Fairview Ave in Wauwatosa. They are listed for the panel letter, not as a Milwaukee County directory.
Directory-only shops are omitted. A page that names these brands and does not print a Wisconsin electrical contractor number is not a listing. The listed shop is not affiliated with Panel Letter.
What to hand the carrier
The useful packet is the closed City of Milwaukee or suburban electrical permit, the passed electrical inspection, an invoice with the license number that was on the permit, and photos if the letter asks. If your electrician produces a load calculation or panel schedule, send that too. We did not find a carrier page that publishes a single statewide sticker form. Ask the agent what they will actually open.

Who pulls it: Plan Exam and Permits sits at 809 N Broadway, 1st Floor, Milwaukee, WI 53202. The Development Center phone is (414) 286-8210. Electrical questions go to (414) 286-2532. General email is DevelopmentCenterInfo@milwaukee.gov. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cashier closes at 4:00 p.m. Electrical files go through the Land Management System. Wauwatosa, West Allis, Greenfield, and Waukesha are not the Broadway file.

Utility coordination
We Energies on most Milwaukee and Wauwatosa bills
Who disconnects: We Energies is blunt about the seal. We have policies prohibiting electricians from cutting meter seals and removing meters when performing residential service rewires. The policies were created to keep electricians and homeowners safe. In certain scenarios, a certified licensed electrician can disconnect a service and remove and reinstall a meter. That certification is for a Wisconsin-licensed electrician who completed the company’s training. Offenders will be reported to the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. That is not a homeowner meter-pull path.
Outage window: We Energies does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count for a residential panel swap. Same-day reconnect on the temporary-disconnect program needs the inspection no later than 3:30 p.m.
Confirm the logo on the bill before anyone prices the job. Most Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, West Allis, and Greenfield addresses are We Energies. A like-for-like panel swap still needs the DNS inspection and that We Energies ticket. A service-size change is still the company’s disconnect and reconnect, or a certified electrician on the company’s list, not a helper cutting the seal. Commercial rewires and residential 320-amp rewires still require scheduling a disconnect and reconnect. Lehmann writes most upgrades finish in a single day, six to eight hours. That is a contractor field note.
What to hand the insurer
- Closed City of Milwaukee or suburban electrical permit
- Passed electrical inspection
- Invoice showing the Wisconsin DSPS license number used on the permit
- Photos of the old and new panel if the carrier’s letter asks for them
- Load calculation or panel schedule if the electrician produced one
Ask your agent for the exact list. Carriers do not publish a single national checklist.
Electricians who advertise this job
A shop is listed only if it advertises Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or insurance-driven panel replacement on its own site and prints a license number there. Trade-association locators already exist. We will not pad this list. Verify the license before you hire.
To get introduced, use the quote form on this page. We do not send you to the shop from here.
