Federal Pacific panel replacement in Santa Maria

A Santa Maria insurance letter that names Federal Pacific is a city or county electrical permit plus a PG&E meter ticket. The Building Division issues the city permit. PG&E owns the seal on the meter.

Do you have an insurance letter about this panel?

Photo upload comes later. A picture of the closed door and the inside label is enough if someone asks.

The disclosure packet named Zinsco on a Santa Maria house. Building and Safety still wants the electrical permit at 110 S. Pine Street. PG&E still wants its own ticket before anyone breaks a meter seal.

Building and Safety issues the electrical permit at Room 101. PG&E's application is required before anyone breaks a meter seal. Those two systems do not match. A helper with a van cannot print that permit or cut PG&E's seal.

What PG&E actually wrote

Start with the 2026 Greenbook. Do not remove or interfere with PG&E meters, seals, padlocks, or other locking devices.

Applicants are not allowed to install any device, disconnect, or connect to PG&E’s service or equipment, including PG&E’s electric meters.

State law prohibits tampering with or connecting to utility property without PG&E’s consent.

If service or meter removal is required, contact PG&E through the application process. Electric Rule 31 repeats the socket rule. Only PG&E personnel and PG&E’s authorized agents are permitted to remove or reinstall a PG&E meter. Applicants, their agent, or any other third party may not breach the seal around that meter.

The city issues the electrical permit. PG&E will not treat a cut seal as ordinary maintenance. Those two systems do not match.

Confirm the logo on the bill. Most Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo, and Lompoc addresses still show PG&E on the delivery side. Some Central Coast bills also name 3CE for generation. PG&E still owns the meter.

PG&E does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count. MAG describes one Santa Maria Federal Pacific job as one day on site. That is a contractor field note.

Permits inside Santa Maria and on the Central Coast

Inside the city, start at the Building Division, 110 S. Pine Street, Room 101. The city’s FAQ is short. A permit is required for anything that involves electrical work. Phone is 805-925-0951 x2241.

Who pulls the permit matters. CSLB’s owner-builder exemption can cover a principal residence if the work is performed before sale, you live there for the 12 months before completion, and you have not used the exemption on more than two structures in three years. Electrical work performed for hire still needs a C-10. Owning the home does not mean you should pull the permit and then hire someone under your name.

San Luis Obispo, Lompoc, Paso Robles, and unincorporated Santa Barbara County file at their own counters. A quote that only says “we handle the permit” should name the city on the address.

Price, without inventing one

MAG’s homepage publishes one completed Santa Maria number and does not dress it up as a citywide average. A Federal Pacific panel replacement plus a Tesla charger circuit is printed at $5,400 as a fixed-price job. That same write-up included a corroded weatherhead.

That line does not describe a bare same-location swap. We will not average them. We are not inventing a Central Coast midpoint from this one invoice.

California license lookup is public. Ask for the C-10 number and check it on CSLB before you sign. One shop advertises this work on their own site and prints a license number. MAG’s homepage names Federal Pacific and Zinsco and prints CSLB License #1115849. They write daily work across Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo, Lompoc, and the Santa Ynez Valley. They are listed for the panel letter, not as a Central Coast directory.

Directory-only shops are omitted. A page that names these brands and does not print a California electrical license number is not a listing. The listed shop is not affiliated with Panel Letter.

What to hand the carrier

The useful packet is the closed city or county electrical permit, the passed inspection, an invoice with the C-10 number that was on the permit, and photos if the letter asks. If your electrician produces a load calculation or panel schedule, send that too. We did not find a carrier page that publishes a single statewide sticker form. Ask the agent what they will actually open.

Electricians who advertise this job

A shop is listed only if it advertises Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or insurance-driven panel replacement on its own site and prints a license number there. Trade-association locators already exist. We will not pad this list. Verify the license before you hire.

To get introduced, use the quote form on this page. We do not send you to the shop from here.
