A Galesburg shop and a Crosstown Parkway permit is how a lot of Kalamazoo letters start. The carrier still named Federal Pacific on the panel.
The city inspector will not own the Consumers Energy seal. Consumers Energy will not print the Suite B electrical permit. Those two systems do not match. A helper with a van cannot stand in for either one.
What the utilities actually wrote
Most Kalamazoo, Portage, Richland, and Battle Creek bills are Consumers Energy. Confirm the logo on the bill before anyone prices the job.
Start with the Electric Service and Metering Information and Requirements. All connections or disconnections between the Company’s supply system and the customer’s service facilities shall be made by the Company or other specifically authorized by the Company in each specific instance.
The Company will not permit unauthorized connections to its facilities.
Tampering with the Company’s meter is prohibited by Michigan State Law.
Tampering with the Company’s meter seals, and the unauthorized breaking of the Company’s seals, are prohibited by Michigan State Law and will not be tolerated by the Company.
If it is necessary in an emergency to destroy a Company seal, the Company must be notified promptly. Application for a change in existing service is 1-800-477-5050. That is not a homeowner meter-pull path.
Consumers Energy does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count. ROC writes that they coordinate the reconnect with Consumers Energy. That is a contractor field note.
Permits in Kalamazoo and in the nearby townships
Inside the city, start at Community Planning and Economic Development, 150 E. Crosstown Parkway, Suite B. The office email is constructionpermits@kalamazoocity.org. Electrical work uses the Electrical Permit Application.
Who pulls the permit matters. Electrical work shall not be started until the permit has been issued. A homeowner may apply only after the city confirms they are the owner on record. Work on a rental has to be a licensed contractor. The 2026 Homeowner Affidavit is self-perform work in the signer’s own home. Owning the home does not mean you should pull the permit and then hire someone under your name.
Comstock, Parchment, Richland, and other participating townships file at KABA, 2322 Nazareth Road. A quote that only says “we handle the permit” should name the city or township on the address.
Price, without inventing one
Two West Michigan contractor pages publish panel bands and do not hide the split.
ROC’s residential FAQ prints most 200-amp upgrades at $2,000 to $4,500. Mulder’s Holland and Grand Rapids page prints most 100-amp to 200-amp upgrades at $2,100 to $3,800. Those two systems do not match. We will not average them. We are not inventing a Crosstown midpoint from either line.
Michigan license lookup is public. Ask for the number and check it on LARA before you sign. One shop advertises this work on their own site and prints a license number. ROC’s residential page names Federal Pacific and Zinsco. The shop’s own site prints License #6112466. They write daily work from 9406 E K Ave in Galesburg. They are listed for the panel letter, not as a Kalamazoo County directory.
Directory-only shops are omitted. A page that names these brands and does not print a Michigan electrical contractor number is not a listing. The listed shop is not affiliated with Panel Letter.
What to hand the carrier
The useful packet is the closed City of Kalamazoo or KABA electrical permit, the passed electrical inspection, an invoice with the license number that was on the permit, and photos if the letter asks. If your electrician produces a load calculation or panel schedule, send that too. We did not find a carrier page that publishes a single statewide sticker form. Ask the agent what they will actually open.
Typical replacement cost
One Galesburg shop and one Holland shop publish West Michigan bands that do not match. We are not inventing a Crosstown midpoint from them
$2,000 to $4,500
Most residential 200-amp panel upgrades in West Michigan
Their residential FAQ. The band depends on service age, meter location, grounding, and whether the utility reconnects the drop. A Holland shop prints $2,100 to $3,800 for most 100-amp to 200-amp upgrades. Those two systems do not match. We will not average them. We are not inventing a Crosstown midpoint from either line.
Source: ROC Electric$2,100 to $3,800
Most 100-amp to 200-amp upgrades printed by a Holland / Grand Rapids shop
Their panel-upgrade page covering Zeeland, Holland, Hudsonville, and Grand Rapids. They do not name Federal Pacific or Zinsco on that page. This is not ROC’s $2,000 to $4,500 West Michigan line. Those two systems do not match. We will not average them.

Permit
City of Kalamazoo Community Planning and Economic Development
Who pulls it: Community Planning and Economic Development sits at 150 E. Crosstown Parkway, Suite B, Kalamazoo, MI 49001. The office email is constructionpermits@kalamazoocity.org. Phone is 311 or (269) 337-8000. Electrical work uses the city’s Electrical Permit Application. Electrical work shall not be started until the permit has been issued. Review can take up to two weeks. A homeowner may apply only after the city confirms they are the owner on record. Work on a rental has to be a licensed contractor. The Homeowner Affidavit on the 2026 application says the electrical work shall be installed by the signer in their own home, the home they live in or are about to occupy. Inspections are scheduled at 337-8548 or permitinspections@kalamazoocity.org. Portage, Comstock, Parchment, Richland, and other KABA towns are not the Crosstown Parkway file.
Comstock, Parchment, Richland, and other participating townships file at the Kalamazoo Area Building Authority, 2322 Nazareth Road. KABA says a homeowner may obtain a permit if they occupy the dwelling. KABA still recommends the contractor pull it. A quote that only says we handle the permit should name the city or township on the address. Michigan electrical licensing is LARA, Bureau of Construction Codes. Ask for the number they will put on the Kalamazoo or KABA file.
Utility coordination
Consumers Energy on most Kalamazoo and Portage bills
Who disconnects: Consumers Energy’s Electric Service and Metering Information and Requirements are blunt. If it is necessary in an emergency to destroy a Company seal to gain access to Company equipment, the Company must be notified promptly. Application for a change in existing service is made by calling 1-800-477-5050. That is not a homeowner meter-pull path.
Outage window: Consumers Energy does not publish a guaranteed power-off hour count for a residential panel swap.
Confirm the logo on the bill before anyone prices the job. Most Kalamazoo, Portage, Richland, and Battle Creek addresses are Consumers Energy. A like-for-like panel swap still needs the city or KABA inspection and that utility ticket. A service-size change is still the company’s disconnect and reconnect, not a helper cutting the seal. ROC writes that they coordinate the reconnect with Consumers Energy. That is a contractor field note.
What to hand the insurer
- Closed City of Kalamazoo or KABA electrical permit
- Passed electrical inspection
- Invoice showing the Michigan license number used on the permit
- Photos of the old and new panel if the carrier’s letter asks for them
- Load calculation or panel schedule if the electrician produced one
Ask your agent for the exact list. Carriers do not publish a single national checklist.
Electricians who advertise this job
A shop is listed only if it advertises Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or insurance-driven panel replacement on its own site and prints a license number there. Trade-association locators already exist. We will not pad this list. Verify the license before you hire.
To get introduced, use the quote form on this page. We do not send you to the shop from here.
